How to Start Therapy Online: Step-by-Step Guide | SHIFT Your Journey®

One of the most consistent reasons people delay starting therapy is uncertainty about the process. Not knowing what happens next. Not knowing what will be asked of them. Not knowing whether there will be a long waitlist or an awkward intake call.

This post removes that uncertainty entirely. Here is exactly what starting therapy at SHIFT Your Journey® looks like, step by step.

There is no mystery in the process. Only a door, a form, and a team ready to receive you.

Step 1: Complete the Appointment Request Form

The process begins with a short appointment request form. It asks for basic information and a brief sense of what brings you in. There is no right or wrong way to fill it out. You can write: I’m exhausted and I don’t know where to start. That is sufficient.

●  Takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete

●  No phone call required to initiate the process

●  No commitment required at this stage

●  Can be completed at any time from anywhere in CT, FL, MA, NJ, NY, PA, or TX

Step 2: Client Care Response Within 48 Hours

Once your form is received, our Client Care team will be in touch within 48 hours. They will confirm your information, answer logistical questions, and begin the matching process. This is also when insurance verification happens — so there are no financial surprises before your first session.

See our Insurance & Coverage page for details on plans we accept.

Step 3: Therapist Match Through Therapeutic Fit™

You will be matched with a therapist through our Therapeutic Fit™ process, which accounts for your clinical needs, cultural background, communication preferences, and availability. If the first match does not feel right, we adjust.

Step 4: Your First Session

Your first session is a beginning, not a deep dive. Your therapist will spend time getting to know you — your history, your goals, and what you are hoping to find. You will not be pushed faster than you are ready.

Most people leave their first session with one of two feelings: relief that they finally did it, or a quiet sense of ‘I didn’t know I needed to say that.’ Both are signs the process is working.

What You Need to Get Started

●  A private space and a device with internet access

●  Your insurance card (if using insurance)

●  10 minutes to complete the request form

●  Willingness to show up — that is the only prerequisite

This process is designed around you. Not the other way around.
