You Are Not Alone in This

The Barriers Are Real — and So Is the Path Through

You may have grown up in a home where you handled things on your own. Where struggle was kept quiet, held inside the family, or offered up in prayer. Where asking for help outside the community felt like betrayal — or weakness. We understand that.

And we know that the mental health system has not always made it easy for Black communities to trust it — or even find a home in it. The lack of providers who look like you, who speak your language, who understand what it means to carry what you carry — that's not in your head. It's documented. It's real. And it's exactly why SHIFT Your Journey® exists.

Your culture is not a footnote in your healing. At SHIFT Your Journey®, it is the foundation. What many call culturally affirming care, we understand as an ongoing practice of cultural humility — because your story is always unfolding, and so is our commitment to truly see it.

The SHIFT Your Journey® Difference

More Than Culture — Clinical Excellence, Rooted in Your World

We get it. You've moved across oceans, time zones, or just neighborhoods — and with that move came everything no one warned you about. The loneliness. The weight of expectation from two worlds at once. The grief of what you left behind. The exhaustion of proving you belong. At SHIFT Your Journey®, we don't just acknowledge that — we are trained to work with it, clinically and compassionately.

Therapists Who Have Lived It — and Trained For It

Our multicultural clinical team brings lived experience navigating the same intersections our clients do — code-switching, carrying family expectations across cultures, making peace with belonging to more than one world. You do not spend your session explaining. You spend it healing.

Lived Experience
The Weight of Two Worlds: Immigration, Identity & Grief
+

Whether you left your home country for opportunity or survival — that transition carries grief, isolation, and identity strain that mainstream therapy often misses. The pressure to succeed so the sacrifice was "worth it." The guilt of being far. The quiet mourning of who you were before you arrived. We hold all of that.

Immigration & Diaspora
Racial & Generational Trauma — Treated With Clinical Precision
+

Racial stress, microaggressions, and the trauma passed down through generations are documented, measurable contributors to anxiety, depression, and PTSD. We name them. We treat them. With evidence-based clinical frameworks — not minimized, never set aside.

Trauma-Informed
Ongoing Training — Because Culture Is Always Evolving
+

Culturally rooted care is not a credential you earn once. Our clinicians engage in continuous, structured training in cultural humility, equity, and trauma-informed practice. The work doesn't stop — because your healing doesn't stop either.

Continuous Learning
Therapeutic Fit™ — Matched with Intention
+

We don't assign whoever is available. Our Therapeutic Fit™ process matches you based on clinical needs, cultural background, language, and your specific goals. If the first match doesn't feel right, we keep working. No waitlist, no guessing.

Intentional Matching
Multilingual. Confidential. Non-Judgmental.
+

Sessions in Haitian Kreyòl, French, English, Spanish, Ga, Hindi, Twi, and more. Your faith matters here. Your family structure matters here. Your story — all of it — is welcome. Stigma has kept too many people from getting support. We are committed to removing that barrier.

Proven Therapies, Practiced With Cultural Humility

Every modality at SHIFT Your Journey® is evidence-based and adapted by licensed clinicians who understand how cultural context shapes the healing process — as an ongoing practice, not a box to check.

Start the Conversation
01 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
AnxietyDepressionStress
An extensively researched, structured approach that helps clients identify and reshape unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. Highly effective for anxiety and depression, with strong outcomes across diverse populations when delivered with cultural awareness and sensitivity.
02 EMDR
TraumaPTSDRacial Trauma
+
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — recognized by the WHO, APA, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for the treatment of PTSD and trauma. EMDR helps the brain process distressing memories so they no longer carry the same emotional charge. Delivered at SHIFT Your Journey® through a culturally rooted lens.
03 Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)
Generational TraumaPTSDGrief
+
A structured, evidence-based intervention designed to address trauma-related symptoms. Supports emotional regulation and adaptive coping for clients who have experienced significant trauma — including adverse childhood experiences, community-based trauma, and racial stress.
04 Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
AnxietyIdentityLife Transitions
+
A research-supported approach that builds psychological flexibility — the capacity to engage with difficult thoughts and emotions without being controlled by them. Clients identify their values and take meaningful action aligned with those values, even in hard seasons of life.
05 Narrative Therapy
IdentitySelf-WorthEmpowerment
+
A collaborative, non-pathologizing approach that invites clients to examine the stories shaping their self-perception — including those shaped by systemic, familial, and cultural forces — and explore more empowering ways of understanding their lives, choices, and identities.
06 Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
StressAnxietyEmotional Regulation
+
A well-researched program using mindfulness practices to regulate the nervous system, reduce chronic stress, and build present-moment awareness. Integrated at SHIFT Your Journey® with cultural humility — because context always shapes how these tools land for each person.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Straightforward answers from our clinical team — especially for those considering therapy for the first time.

Is therapy really for me? I was raised to handle things on my own.+
Many people — particularly in communities where resilience has been a matter of survival — carry the belief that seeking help signals weakness. That belief is understandable, but it is not clinically accurate. Therapy is a structured clinical service, similar to physical rehabilitation or any form of healthcare. Many people come to SHIFT Your Journey® already strong — and leave with additional tools to sustain and build on that strength.
What does "culturally rooted therapy" actually mean?+
It means your full cultural context — your family structure, your faith, your language, your history of migration, the expectations placed on you by two worlds — is treated as clinically relevant from the first session. You do not have to explain code-switching, justify your relationship with family or faith, or wonder if your therapist understands why you carry what you carry. That context is already part of how we work.
Do you have Black therapists on your team?+
Yes. Our clinical team includes Black and multicultural therapists. Through our Therapeutic Fit™ process, we match clients intentionally — considering clinical needs, cultural background, language preference, and goals. If the first match does not feel right, our Client Care team will continue working with you until it is. We do not send you back to a waiting list.
Is everything I share in therapy confidential?+
Yes. Confidentiality is protected under federal and applicable state law, including HIPAA. Information shared in therapy is not disclosed without your written consent. There are narrow legal exceptions — primarily when there is an imminent risk of serious harm to yourself or others. Your therapist will review these protections with you during intake.
Do you accept insurance? What if cost is a concern?+
SHIFT Your Journey® accepts many major insurance plans and also offers self-pay options. Contact our Client Care team and we will walk through your benefits before your first session — no surprises. Reach us at 914-221-3200 or [email protected].
Can therapy address racial stress and workplace discrimination?+
Yes. Racial stress, microaggressions, and what researchers call "racial battle fatigue" are recognized in clinical and public health literature as contributors to anxiety, depression, and physiological stress responses. These are within the scope of therapy at SHIFT Your Journey® and are addressed using evidence-based frameworks — not minimized, never dismissed.
My faith is central to my life. Can that be part of my therapy?+
Yes. For many clients, faith and spiritual community are meaningful sources of strength. Our therapists engage respectfully with these dimensions of your life — integrating them into the therapeutic process rather than setting them aside. Research supports that for many Black clients, faith and therapy work best when they work together.
How do I get started with SHIFT Your Journey®?+
Request an appointment at shiftyourjourney.com/request-an-appointment. Our Client Care team will follow up to begin the Therapeutic Fit™ matching process. All sessions are 100% online, available to clients in CT, FL, MA, NJ, NY, PA, and TX. Hours: Monday–Friday 9AM–8PM and Saturday 9AM–6PM EST.
