Woman in deep reflection — therapy and healing
SHIFT Your Journey® — Your Questions Answered

You Deserve a Therapist
Who Actually Gets It.

The Bond Across hundreds of studies, who your therapist is matters more than what method they use. Feeling seen, understood, and safe is not a bonus — it is what makes therapy work.
50% of people of color who enter therapy leave before it has a chance to help — most often because the therapist did not understand their world.
Proven Culturally adapted therapy outperforms standard unadapted approaches for clients of color. The research is clear: the match matters.

At SHIFT Your Journey®, we match you with a therapist who understands your world — your culture, your story, the weight you carry. The research is clear: that match matters.

Getting Started

Not Sure Where to Begin?

The most common questions from people thinking about therapy for the first time.

Q
How do I know if I need therapy?
You might benefit from therapy if you're experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress, or difficulty coping with daily life. Therapy can also help with relationship issues, trauma, grief, life transitions, and personal growth. You don't need to be in crisis — if something feels heavier than you can carry alone, that's enough reason to reach out.
Q
What are common signs that I might benefit from support?
Everyone's experience is different, but some signs that therapy might help include:
  • Persistent worry, anxiety, or feeling on edge
  • Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless most days
  • Difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite, or low energy
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Increased irritability, anger, or mood swings
  • Pulling away from people you care about
  • Using food, alcohol, or other substances to cope
These are not signs of weakness — they are signs that something in you is asking for care.
Q
What happens in the first therapy session?
Your first session is a collaborative conversation — not an interrogation. Your therapist will focus on getting to know you: your concerns, your goals, and what brought you to therapy. You're welcome to share as much or as little as feels comfortable. Your therapist will also explain how sessions work, answer your questions, and help you feel grounded in the process.
Q
What if therapy has not worked for me before?
A previous experience that didn't click is often a match problem, not a you problem. Therapy is deeply relational — when the therapist doesn't understand your cultural background, your lived experience, or your specific goals, the process can stall. Our Therapeutic Fit™ process exists specifically to address this. We match intentionally, and if the first match isn't right, we keep working until it is. You don't start over — you just move forward with a better fit.
Q
What are the steps to get started?
Just three steps:
  • Step 1: Request an appointment online.
  • Step 2: Complete your intake paperwork — sent to you digitally.
  • Step 3: Meet your matched therapist for your first session, virtually, from wherever you are.
Our Client Care team handles the details. Call or text 914-221-3200 or email Hello@shiftyourjourney.com.
Q
Can therapy help if I don't have a diagnosis?
Absolutely. Many clients come to SHIFT to manage stress, strengthen relationships, work through life changes, build confidence, or simply better understand themselves. You do not need a clinical diagnosis to benefit from therapy. Healing and personal growth are always valid reasons to start.

Our Approach

How We Actually Work

Understanding our approach helps you know what to expect — and why it works.

Q
What is culturally responsive therapy and why does it matter?
Culturally responsive therapy is an evidence-based approach that integrates your cultural background, values, and life experiences into the therapeutic process. It recognizes that race, ethnicity, family dynamics, religion, and community all shape your mental health and how you navigate challenges.

At SHIFT Your Journey®, this isn't a checkbox — it's the foundation. Research shows that clients who feel their cultural identity is acknowledged are more likely to trust the process, open up more fully, and experience better outcomes. Learn more about culture & healing at SHIFT →
Q
Is culturally responsive therapy research-based?
Yes. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have found that integrating cultural identity into therapy leads to stronger therapeutic alliances, better engagement, and improved mental health outcomes — particularly for communities of color who have historically been underserved in mainstream mental health care. At SHIFT, our culturally responsive approach is paired with evidence-based modalities including CBT, EMDR, polyvagal-informed care, and mindfulness-based techniques.
Q
What is holistic therapy and why does it matter?
Holistic therapy looks at you as a whole person — mind, body, and spirit — rather than isolating one part of your experience. It recognizes that your emotional health is connected to your physical health, your thoughts, your relationships, and your environment.

At SHIFT Your Journey®, we combine holistic principles with evidence-based techniques — mindfulness, breathwork, somatic awareness, and culturally grounded practices — to address root causes, not just symptoms. The goal is not temporary relief. It is lasting, whole-person change.

Individual therapy sessions are typically 53 to 60 minutes, depending on your specific needs and insurance plan. Your therapist will confirm session length during your first appointment.
Q
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is confidential. Your privacy is both a legal right and a clinical priority. There are legally defined situations where confidentiality may not apply:
  • When there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others
  • When there is suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elderly person, or vulnerable adult (mandatory reporting)
  • When records are subpoenaed by a court of law
  • When you provide written authorization to release your information
Your therapist will walk you through the full informed consent process before your first session. View our Notice of Privacy Practices →
Q
What services and specialties do you offer?

Therapy for Black Communities →  |  Culture & Healing →
Q
Do I have to explain my cultural background to my therapist?
No. Our therapists don't just know about cultural experiences — many live them. You will not spend your sessions educating your therapist about code-switching, generational trauma, racial stress, or the weight of community expectations. We already understand that world. Your session time belongs to your healing.
Q
Do you offer therapy in languages other than English?
Yes. We offer therapy in multiple languages. When you request an appointment, let our Client Care team know your language preference and we will match you with a therapist who can serve you in your language.
