Understanding Your Mental Health Benefits

Insurance language can be confusing. Here are the key terms you need to know before your first session.

Copay

A fixed amount you pay per therapy session, regardless of what your insurance is billed. For example, if your copay is $30, you pay $30 per session and insurance covers the rest.

Deductible

The amount you pay out-of-pocket for covered services before your insurance begins to share costs. Mental health benefits may be subject to your plan's deductible.

Coinsurance

After meeting your deductible, you may pay a percentage of costs (e.g., 20%) and your insurance pays the remainder. This differs from a flat copay.

Out-of-Pocket Maximum

The most you will pay in a plan year. Once you reach this limit, your insurance covers 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

In-network means lower costs through a contracted rate. Out-of-network means higher costs or no coverage. Always confirm your status with your insurer before scheduling.

Primary & Secondary Insurance

If you carry more than one insurance plan, disclose all coverage to SHIFT Your Journey® before your first session. Failing to do so can result in claim denials, billing delays, and may affect your financial responsibility for sessions already received.

Plans and networks change frequently. Even if your plan is not listed above, contact our billing team at 914-221-3200 and we will check whether we are in-network for your specific policy. If we cannot accept your insurance, we will discuss self-pay options with you.
Most insurance plans do not require a referral for outpatient mental health therapy. However, some HMO plans may require one. We recommend calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card to confirm your plan's specific requirements before your first session.
Your employer does not have access to your clinical records. When you use insurance, your insurer may receive a diagnosis code for billing purposes, but your specific session content remains private and protected by HIPAA. If full privacy is a priority, self-pay eliminates any insurance billing entirely.
The federal No Surprises Act (effective January 2022) protects you from unexpected medical bills. If you are uninsured or choose to pay out-of-pocket, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before your first session. SHIFT Your Journey® is committed to providing this estimate before care begins. Learn more about our No Surprises Act policy.
Session limits vary significantly by plan. Many commercial plans cover a set number of sessions per year; others cover sessions subject to medical necessity review. Under mental health parity law, plans generally cannot impose stricter limits on mental health visits than on medical visits — though how this is applied varies by plan type. SHIFT Your Journey® can share benefit information we receive from your insurer, but we strongly recommend confirming your specific session limits directly with your insurance payer, as this information comes from insurance companies and is subject to change.
