Understanding Your Mental Health Benefits
Insurance language can be confusing. Here are the key terms you need to know before your first session.
Copay
A fixed amount you pay per therapy session, regardless of what your insurance is billed. For example, if your copay is $30, you pay $30 per session and insurance covers the rest.
Deductible
The amount you pay out-of-pocket for covered services before your insurance begins to share costs. Mental health benefits may be subject to your plan's deductible.
Coinsurance
After meeting your deductible, you may pay a percentage of costs (e.g., 20%) and your insurance pays the remainder. This differs from a flat copay.
Out-of-Pocket Maximum
The most you will pay in a plan year. Once you reach this limit, your insurance covers 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
In-network means lower costs through a contracted rate. Out-of-network means higher costs or no coverage. Always confirm your status with your insurer before scheduling.
Primary & Secondary Insurance
If you carry more than one insurance plan, disclose all coverage to SHIFT Your Journey® before your first session. Failing to do so can result in claim denials, billing delays, and may affect your financial responsibility for sessions already received.
