Understanding Trauma

Trauma Is More
Than One Moment

Trauma is any experience that overwhelms your capacity to cope — leaving your nervous system stuck in a state of threat long after the moment has passed. It is not weakness. It is a wound that needs real care.

For Black communities and communities of color, trauma layers — across racial stress, systemic oppression, displacement, and what has been passed down through generations. Healing requires a therapist who understands the full context of your life, not just your symptoms.

We Work With
Single-Incident Trauma Complex Trauma Racial Trauma Generational Trauma Childhood Trauma Grief & Loss Immigration & Cultural Trauma Community Violence Medical Trauma

Single-Incident Trauma

A specific event — an accident, assault, sudden loss, natural disaster, or medical crisis — that overwhelmed your ability to cope in the moment.

Complex Trauma

Repeated, prolonged experiences — often beginning in childhood — that disrupted your sense of self, safety, and ability to trust.

Racial Trauma

The cumulative psychological injury caused by racism, discrimination, racial profiling, and living within systems of racial oppression — carried in the body, often for a lifetime.

Generational & Historical Trauma

Collective wounds — rooted in slavery, colonization, and systemic violence — transmitted across generations through family, community, and the nervous system itself.

Childhood Trauma

Adverse childhood experiences including neglect, abuse, household dysfunction, and early loss that quietly shape adult wellbeing, relationships, and sense of self.

Grief & Loss

Complicated grief, sudden loss, community grief, and the layers of loss that never had space to be mourned — including losses the world didn't always acknowledge.

Immigration & Cultural Trauma

The grief of displacement, cultural loss, acculturation stress, and the unique wounds carried by immigrant and diaspora communities navigating life between worlds.

Community Violence

Exposure to violence within your neighborhood, school, or community — including the ongoing impact of witnessing harm done to people you love.

Medical Trauma

Frightening medical experiences, chronic illness, or encounters with a healthcare system that has historically failed Black and brown communities.

Trauma doesn't just live in you.
It lives between you.

Healing changes not just how you feel — but how you show up for the people you love.

Recognizing the Signs

How Trauma
Shows Up

Trauma doesn't always look the way we expect. It can show up as anger, numbness, or the constant sense that you need to be ready for the next thing to go wrong. It can feel like you are always carrying everyone else while quietly falling apart inside. It can live in your body as headaches, stomach issues, chest tightness, exhaustion, or pain that doctors can't explain.

For Black and brown communities, trauma symptoms are often misread — dismissed as overreaction, labeled as attitude, or simply never asked about. You may have been told to push through it. You may have been carrying it so long it just feels like who you are.

It is not who you are. It is what happened to you. And what happened to you is treatable.

You don't need a PTSD diagnosis to get support. Many people carry significant trauma responses that impact daily life without meeting full diagnostic criteria. Your experience and your wellbeing matter regardless of where you fall on any clinical spectrum.

Trauma Therapy That Holds
Your Whole Story

For Black communities and communities of color, healing is deepest when your therapist understands the specific weight of your world — not just clinically, but as a human being who gets it.

Racial & Systemic Wounds

We recognize race-based pain as a real and serious form of psychological injury — not an overreaction. Our work addresses the cumulative impact of racism, discrimination, and the ongoing stress of navigating systems that were not built with you in mind.

Generational & Historical Trauma

Research confirms that trauma passes down through families and communities. We work with you to recognize, name, and process inherited wounds — including the ongoing impact of slavery, colonization, and systemic harm on Black and brown families today.

Faith, Spirituality & Community

For many in our communities, faith and community are not separate from healing — they are central to it. We welcome and weave these dimensions of your life into your care, because wholeness includes all of who you are.

Cultural Identity & Resilience

Healing isn't only about reducing symptoms. It's about reconnecting to your identity, your roots, and the resilience your community has always carried. We actively build on those strengths throughout your treatment.
