Depression Therapy That Understands Your World
Online individual therapy for Black, Afro-Latino, Caribbean, and other communities of color — where what you carry culturally is never separated from what you're healing clinically.
Depression by the Numbers
Depression is real. It's also treatable. At SHIFT Your Journey® Mental Health Counseling, our clinicians meet you where healing and culture intersect — so therapy works with your life, not around it. Our Therapeutic Fit™ process matches you with the right clinician from the start.

Major depressive disorder is one of the most common mental health conditions in the world — and one of the most undertreated in communities of color. Structural barriers to care, cultural stigma around mental health, and decades of medical mistrust have left too many people without the support they deserve.
In Black, Afro-Latino, and Caribbean communities, depression often presents differently than it does in clinical textbooks. It can show up as persistent fatigue, irritability, feeling spiritually disconnected, or carrying the weight of your family's pain alongside your own. It is shaped by intergenerational trauma, systemic stress, and the emotional labor of navigating a world that doesn't always make space for your full humanity.
That context is not incidental. It is central to effective treatment. Our clinicians are trained to hold both the clinical and the cultural — because healing that ignores where you come from rarely gets you where you're going.
You May Be Experiencing Depression If You Notice:
- Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness that doesn't lift
- Low energy, exhaustion, or difficulty getting through the day
- Loss of interest in things that used to bring you joy
- Changes in sleep — sleeping too much or too little
- Appetite changes or unexplained weight shifts
- Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things
- Feeling like a burden, withdrawing from people you love
- Irritability, restlessness, or a short fuse that's hard to explain
- Feeling spiritually distant, numb, or disconnected from yourself
- Thoughts of death or feeling like things would be better without you

What Stays True in Every Session
These are not positioning statements. They are the clinical commitments that shape how we work.
Culture Is Clinical Data
Your faith, family structure, community, and intergenerational history are not tangents in the room — they are primary clinical information. We bring cultural humility and genuine fluency into every session.
Evidence-Based, Always
Every modality we use — CBT, behavioral activation, ACT, interpersonal therapy — is grounded in research and selected for your specific presentation. We apply evidence with cultural precision, not cultural neutrality.
The Right Fit Drives Outcomes
Research consistently shows the therapeutic alliance is one of the strongest predictors of treatment success. Our Therapeutic Fit™ process ensures you are matched with a clinician who genuinely understands your world.
Evidence-Based Approaches Applied With Cultural Intelligence
We draw from multiple modalities proven to reduce depressive symptoms and build long-term emotional resilience. Your clinician will collaborate with you to determine the approach — or combination — that fits your needs and your life.
-
Identifies and restructures thought patterns that deepen depression — including internalized messages about strength, struggle, and self-worth common in many communities of color.
-
An evidence-based trauma processing therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories contributing to depression — including racial trauma, intergenerational pain, and adverse life experiences.
-
Builds four core skill sets — mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness — particularly effective when depression intersects with intense emotional experiences or relationship stress.
-
Builds psychological flexibility — helping you move toward what matters even when difficult thoughts and emotions are present, without needing to fight yourself to do it.
-
Re-engages you with meaningful activity and connection to rebuild energy, purpose, and momentum when depression has narrowed your world.
-
Addresses relational patterns — grief, role transitions, conflict — that both contribute to and are complicated by depression, with cultural context at the center of the work.
-
Recognizes that depression often lives alongside unprocessed trauma — including intergenerational, racial, and community trauma — and treats both with care and clinical precision.
-
Integrates present-moment awareness and somatic grounding practices that support emotional regulation and reconnection to self — adapted to fit your cultural and spiritual framework.
