Understanding Depression

Depression Is More Than
Feeling Sad

Depression is not a bad mood you can push through. It is a persistent weight that settles into your mind, your body, and your sense of self — draining your energy, clouding your thinking, and making even the smallest tasks feel impossible. It is not something you chose, and it is not something you should have to carry alone.

For Black communities and communities of color, depression carries layers the clinical definition misses — the pressure to be strong, the exhaustion of racial stress, and the generational pain of simply surviving. Depression here is frequently misread as laziness or attitude. You deserve care that sees past those dismissals, grounded in the same affirming approach we bring to anxiety and trauma.

Types of Depression We Treat
Major Depression Persistent Depression Racial Grief & Loss Cultural Exhaustion Postpartum Depression Seasonal Depression High-Functioning Depression Grief & Loss Bipolar Depression Depression & Anxiety

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

Persistent low mood or loss of interest lasting two or more weeks, affecting sleep, energy, appetite, concentration, and daily functioning. The most commonly diagnosed form of depression — and one we treat with depth and care.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD)

A lower-grade but chronic form of depression that can last for years. Many people with PDD have lived with it so long they assume it is simply their personality — not a treatable condition.

Racial Grief & Loss

The cumulative grief of witnessing racial violence, absorbing repeated microaggressions, and mourning what could have been in a more just world. This is a distinct and serious form of emotional injury that deserves direct, affirming care.

Cultural Exhaustion & Depletion

The emotional drain of being the "first," the "only," or the one who holds the family together — compounded by code-switching, navigating white spaces, and the relentless pressure to represent your community while quietly falling apart.

Postpartum Depression

Depression during or after pregnancy that goes beyond "baby blues" — persistent sadness, disconnection, or numbness that interferes with bonding and daily life. Black women face disproportionate maternal health challenges, and we hold this reality with care.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Depression that follows a seasonal pattern — most commonly in winter months — with low energy, increased sleep, withdrawal, and a persistent sense of emptiness that lifts when the seasons change.

High-Functioning Depression

Looks productive, capable, and "fine" on the outside. Inside: emotional numbness, going through the motions, and a deep sense that something important is missing — even when life looks good on paper. Especially common among high achievers in our communities.

Grief & Loss

The pain of losing someone you love — or something essential to your identity — that crosses into depression. In communities that grieve collectively and often without adequate support, this pain can compound across generations.

Bipolar Depression

The depressive episodes within Bipolar Disorder — periods of profound low mood, withdrawal, and hopelessness that alternate with elevated or mixed states. Accurate diagnosis and integrated care are essential.

Depression & Anxiety Together

Depression and anxiety frequently co-occur — the numbness of depression alongside the dread and restlessness of anxiety. Our therapists are trained to treat both simultaneously with integrated, personalized care.

What Relief Can Feel Like

Relief from depression doesn't mean the absence of all difficulty. It means waking up and feeling like yourself again — present, connected, and able to find meaning in the moments that matter.

In our communities, depression often hides
behind productivity, perfection, and a perfect smile.
You are allowed to need more than that.

You deserve a therapist who understands the full weight of what you carry.

Recognizing the Signs

How Depression
Shows Up

Depression does not always look like lying in bed crying. For many people — especially in Black and brown communities where strength is a survival strategy — depression is quiet, disciplined, and hidden behind a full calendar and a composed exterior.

It is the heaviness behind the smile. The going-through-the-motions of a life that looks fine from the outside. The numbness that has settled in so gradually you cannot even remember what it felt like to genuinely enjoy something.

You may have been told to rest more, think positively, or simply push through. You may have normalized the emptiness because survival demanded it. But depression is not a spiritual failure — and it is not something you should have to endure alone.

You do not need to hit rock bottom to deserve support. Depression exists on a spectrum. Whether your symptoms are severe or quietly persistent, you are deserving of care — and healing is possible at any point in the journey.

Mind & Thinking
  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or numbness
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Negative self-talk and feelings of worthlessness
  • Loss of interest in things you used to love
  • Thoughts of hopelessness or "what's the point"
Body & Physical Signs
  • Persistent fatigue — even after sleeping
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Sleeping too much or not being able to sleep
  • Heaviness in the body, slowed movement
  • Unexplained aches, headaches, or digestive issues
Behavior & Daily Life
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, and community
  • Neglecting responsibilities or personal care
  • Losing motivation for work, goals, or relationships
  • Using substances to feel something — or nothing
  • Going through the motions without presence
Emotional Signs
  • Irritability or sudden emotional outbursts
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
  • Crying without knowing why — or being unable to cry at all
  • Shame about struggling when life looks "fine"
  • A quiet, persistent sense that something is wrong
Depression in Our Communities
  • Presenting as anger, irritability, or being "difficult"
  • Masked by overworking, over-giving, or staying busy
  • Compounded by racial trauma, grief, and systemic stress
  • Dismissed with "you have so much to be grateful for"
  • Carried silently to protect the family or the community image

If any of this feels familiar — you don't have to keep carrying it quietly.

How We Help

Our Depression Therapy
Approaches

CBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Identify and gently challenge the negative thought patterns that feed depression — building new ways of thinking that are grounded in truth, not despair.

DBT
Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Build emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and self-compassion — skills that are especially effective when depression shows up alongside intense emotional pain.

B.A.
Behavioral Activation

Depression shrinks your world. We work with you to take small, meaningful steps back into living — rebuilding energy, purpose, and connection at a pace that honors where you are.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness & Trauma-Informed Care

Grounding practices that help you reconnect with the present — and trauma-informed approaches that recognize when depression is rooted in unprocessed pain. Often combined with our trauma therapy work.

A Space Built for You

Therapy That Sees
Your Whole Story

Healing happens when your therapist doesn't just see your diagnosis — they see you. Where you come from, what your community has survived, and what you are still being asked to hold. That kind of care is not a luxury. It is the foundation of real healing.

The Strength Myth

In many of our communities, struggling in silence is not weakness — it has been survival. But carrying the world while quietly breaking is not strength. We create a space where you do not have to perform for anyone, including your therapist. Your pain is valid, and so is your need for support.

Racial Grief & Collective Pain

Absorbing the grief of racial violence, navigating a world that undervalues your life, and carrying the weight of your community's pain — these are real contributors to depression. We name them, treat them, and hold them alongside you with the seriousness they deserve.

Faith, Spirituality & Community

Healing is not separate from faith — for many in our communities, faith is foundational. We honor your spiritual beliefs, your church, your ancestors, and your community as genuine sources of strength and integrate them into care that is fully yours.

Your Story, Your Strengths

Depression tells you that you are broken. It is lying. We help you reconnect with the resilience, the brilliance, and the deep capacity for joy that has always lived within you — and rebuild a life that feels worth waking up for.
